The project
FIREPOCTEP
The FIREPOCTEP project has a total budget of €5.6 million, of which €4.22 million, 75% is funded by the Interreg VA Spain-Portugal Cross-Border Cooperation Program – Interreg POCTEP (2014-2020).
FIREPOCTEP is framed within the Thematic Objective 5 of the POCTEP Program: Promote adaptation to climate change in all sectors. In addition, it responds to the investment priority, with respect to the POCTEP Program, 5B: Promoting investment to address specific risks and ensuring adaptation to disasters and development of disaster management systems.
With a duration of 2 years and 6 months (01/07/2020 – 31/12/2022), this project is designed to address these challenges, favoring development between the neighboring border regions of both countries, allowing the strengthening of forest fire prevention and extinction systems in both States and the improvement of resources for the generation of rural employment after the Covid-19 health crisis.
Its objectives are:
– Identify Strategic Management Zones to minimize the risk and impact of large fires through integrated landscape management in the face of global climate change.
– Encourage public and private investment through pilot experiences in the framework of the Circular Green Economy and the investigation of new market opportunities.
– Educate the permanent and occasional rural population about the risk of major forest fires, good preventive practices and self-protection. Train and equip the personnel of cross-border operations.
